Alternate Drill Downs and Time dimension
Problem(Abstract)
When creating alternate drill-down paths within a time dimension, the drill down paths must be defined so that Transformer can connect them appropriately at the convergence level. In particular, the categories that descend from of the convergence level must be identical. If constructing a time dimension that contains multiple drill-down paths and attempting to connect it at a level for which descendant time periods do not exactly coincide, Transformer will be unable to connect the paths correctly.Resolving the problem
Several factors affect the way in which Transformer creates categories in date
levels, and therefore potentially limit the ability to connect alternate
drill-down paths in a time dimension. The factors are:
1. Whether the drill-down structures differ in type (Calendar or Lunar),
2. How the Year Begins property is set for each drill-down structure, 3. How the properties that affect weeks are defined in each drill-down structure, such as the Week Begins property, the Add Extra Weeks When property (Lunar drill-downs only), and the Partial Weeks property (Calendar drill-downs only).
It is necessary to observe the following rules when constructing alternate drill-down paths in the time dimension:
1. It is only possible to create a time dimension with drill-down paths for both Calendar and Lunar time periods only if the paths converge at the Days level.
2. The Year level cannot be a convergence level for alternate drill-downs.
3. In all alternate drill-downs, the Year Begins property must be set so that the convergence level units (Months, for example) coincide in each drill-down. For example, to connect alternate drill-downs at the Quarter level, the Year Begins property in each alternate drill-down must be offset by exactly n Quarters, where n is 1, 2, or 3 (the offset is less than a full year). Similarly, to connect at the Month level, the Year Begins property in each alternate drill-down must be offset by an integer greater than or equal to one month and less than or equal to 12 months.
When the Year Begins date is offset by integral units of the convergence level, Transformer can construct descendant categories of the convergence level correctly.
For both Lunar and Calendar time dimensions, the rules governing weeks must coincide in all drill downs. In Calendar drill-downs, the Partial Weeks property must be identical in each drill-down. Similarly, in Lunar date dimensions, the Add Extra Weeks When property must be identical in each drill-down.
Note: When creating lunar and calendar alternate drill-downs, Transformer adopts the labelling of the primary drill-down for both time dimensions and displays a warning message that the labelling of the alternate drill-down will conform to that of the primary.
